Doesn't sound like the next raid will open immediately when 8.1 comes out.  Also of note from the panel (mostly post-8.1 stuff):

* There may be added incentives for warfronts so we have a reason to run them more than once per cycle.
* 8.1.5: PvE battlegrounds with AI enemies, Darkmoon Faire rollercoaster, WoD timewalking, Brawler's Guild again, profession epic items, Kul Tiran and Zandalari allied races
* 8.2: Nazjatar (Naga city) and Mechagon (mechagnome city) zones, Azshara raid, new 8-boss dungeon
* 8.2.5: new goblin and worgen character models
* Unknown timeline: heroic warfronts for organized groups of 10+ players

On the PTR, XP requirements to level have been reduced by about 25%.  (Less than that for 1-35, more than that for 35-79.)

Shatters appear to be added for enchanting, so you can turn one crystal into two shards and one shard into three dust.  These are currently a value negative on most servers, but they effectively cap the price of shards as purples become easier to get and blues become more scarce.

There is also incomplete data suggesting that jewelcrafters might be able to convert gems into consumables.  Most interesting are Diamond of Sustenance which is +75 stat food, and Sapphire of Brilliance which looks like an updated Potion of Prolonged Power.  I'm not certain if this will happen, since the names don't line up well with either the green- or blue-quality BfA gems.

Island rewards in 8.1 will depend on the population of the island, not on what you kill.

reddit thinks PvE season 2 will begin on January 22, six weeks after patch 8.1 releases.  This is based on the calendar on the PTR and some inferences; there is no Blizzard announcement. This is now confirmed by Blizzard.  From that calendar, the war campaign quest content appears to be staggered out into four main chunks, with a new chunk every two weeks.

It looks like the new Azerite vendor currency will be named Titan Residuum, and you can start collecting it as soon as the patch lands.  It doesn't look like current-season items will cost much, but you are probably best off saving it up for season 2 so you can buy ilvl 415 items (targeted or random) as soon as possible.  If an emissary quest appears on Sunday the 9th or Monday the 10th with an Azerite cache reward, I would advise saving it for Tuesday so that you can get residuum when you scrap or disenchant the Azerite piece.  Epic Azerite items obtained before the 11th aren't supposed to yield residuum when you scrap them, so simply holding onto the item isn't expected to work.  Also note that the new fifth ring of traits isn't expected to appear on Azerite items until PvE season 2 starts.

The expectation I'm seeing is that the new Darkshore warfront will be available right away, and will reward a piece of ilvl 400 gear (once per cycle), as will its world boss.  That's out of step with the rest of the power progression content, so take advantage of it to help finish out Uldir progression.

PvE season 2 will raise many item level rewards by 30, including normal/heroic/mythic dungeon drops, mythic+ drops and cache rewards, and the world quest reward cap.  This will make enchanting crystals more plentiful and shards more rare, but the addition of a crystal-to-shard shatter in 8.1 means shards won't become crazy expensive.

I believe their blog post about it today(ish) said it will match Arathi gear levels until Season 2 hits.

Background downloader has started only 16.4GB, for such a large "patch" it is downloading rather slowly.

Blizzard released a bunch of specifics about Titan Residuum, though we still don't have official numbers for residuum rewards or item costs.

* A mythic+ this week will earn residuum when the patch launches next Tuesday.
* Keystones higher than 10 will reward additional residuum, with diminishing returns.
* There is no cap on how much you can hold.
* Residuum will not reset at the beginning of PvE season 2.
* Prices for Azerite gear from the vendor will be significantly higher in season 2.
* The cache will reward more residuum in season 2, and ilvl 400+ Azerite pieces will reward more residuum when scrapped or disenchanted.

Taliesin & Evitel's last couple of videos on 8.1 have been ... enlightening. Apparently lots of people are upset? I dunno, I stay out of forums.

And the most recent on "The FURY Of The Playerbase Over 8.1" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fGsGk-vyeU

That's an hour of over-enthusiastic commenters discussing WoW, and I've still got episodes of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" to watch. Would you summarize what their anti-8.1 sentiments are? I hadn't been aware that there were any.

T&E are actually pretty pro-8.1.  I wouldn't characterize the first video as "why you shouldn't come back for 8.1"; that's not its title, and it gives pros and cons depending on your viewpoint.  Basically, if you're okay with BfA, 8.1 is a pretty good first patch; if you're not, 8.1's minor course corrections aren't likely to change your mind.

Patch notes are up: https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/news/22824892

Some tidbits I either wasn't aware of or had only heard about recently:

Quote
* Siege of Boralus and Kings’ Rest are now available on Heroic difficulty.
* New basic equipment for Followers is now available from your Honorbound or 7th Legion reputation vendor.
* Darkmoon Faire quest-based skillups now apply automatically to the most recent expansion profession progress that is not at its maximum.
* Professions-related World Quests now have a chance to reward Expulsom.
* Herbalism World Quests now have a chance to reward Anchor Weed.
* World Quests and Missions now reward more gold.
And some PvP stuff:
Quote
* Nomi is back, and he wants you to bring your most dangerous pots and pans to The Valley of the Four Winds for a new brawl in the kitchen. Look to your in-game calendar for round one of this cutthroat culinary conflict.
* The reward bonuses from War Mode can now scale above 10% when a faction was outnumbered over the course of the preceding week, up to a maximum of 30% additional quest rewards and experience.
* In War Mode, an outnumbered faction now has access to a weekly quest to slay 25 level 120 players of the opposing faction, rewarding a piece of item level 370 Arathi Warfront gear and 1000 Artifact Power.
* War Mode can now be disabled in any rested area. It can still only be enabled in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
