Cataclysm preview information
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:36:36 AM »
http://blue.mmo-champion.com/29/23425636414-cataclysm-stat--system-changes.html

Mostly stuff you may have heard before, but a few new bits:
* Parry will mitigate 50% of the current and next hit, instead of being like dodge + parryhaste.  Some subtleties not revealed here, like whether the second 50% mitigation is "lost" in a parry-miss or parry-parry sequence.
* Armor rebalancing will lead to less of a difference between cloth/leather/mail/plate.
* Block will specifically mitigate 30% of damage when it fires.
* Kings won't boost spirit.  (So, spirit is basically no longer a core stat.)
* Caster weapons will still grant spell power; other items will (as we previous knew) only do so indirectly via Intellect.
* Weapon skills - gone.  No need to learn them, no need to train them up.
* Reforging will allow you to replace one stat with 50% of another stat, with some restrictions.  (Dunno if you can un-reforge an item, but the general idea is that this makes an item with +hit more useful if you're hit-capped.)
* Balance druids and elemental shaman will have a talent which converts spirit to hit, and will share spirit gear with resto druids and resto shaman.
* (From a follow-up) Haste will continue to speed up auto-attack as well as increase the physical DPS resource regeneration rate.

The post also contains a discussion of how existing gear will be re-itemized in 4.0.

Tanking stat changes are a bit odd, but whatever.  This is the real gem, though:

Quote
Weapon Skill - This stat will be removed from the game completely. Classes will start with all the weapon skills they need to know and will not need to improve them.

FINALLY.

I will never regret levelling Unarmed to 400 via punching rhinos with my bare fists.  NEVER.

My dagger skill is actually at 400 now, because I was fists/daggers for a short while when I failed to get the ONE frigging main hand sword in Naxx.

But it's all better now.  I have two axes. Two axes.

You get a small mastery bonus for wearing the highest-armor gear capable for your class. Hunters in mail get a bonus. Hunters in leather do not.
So now we know how they're going to penalize downgearing.

Also, something I missed because part of it was old:
Quote
Ratings will be steeper in Cataclysm, and creatures in later tiers of content will be harder to hit or crit, similar to how level-83 mobs are harder to hit or crit than level-80 mobs.
We've been told before that crit and haste ratings got too high in Wrath because they didn't plan for hard modes (and the accompanying extra tiers of loot).  The new bit is that your hit and expertise caps will go up with higher tiers of raiding in Cataclysm, avoiding the situation where it's a pain in the butt to reach the caps in the first tier of raiding but you start to hate those stats on gear in the highest tier.

Also, reforging will likely be limited to specific conversions, so you're not likely to be able to change a piece of DPS gear into a piece of tanking gear with reforging (because there won't be things like crit->parry).

There appear to be an infinite stream of forum posters who think that tanking will die because there won't be as much of a separation between different armor types or between the health levels of plate and cloth classes as there is currently.  It's the forum axiom: "if it was X, and it will be less than X, then it will be 0."

Wow. I won't lie, this annoys me since it's been years and they still don't seem to get how to properly itemize for classes they make and manipulate (cough, moonkin). A lot will have to change in terms of that getting straight for me to feel confident that this won't anger me at a later date. And I am not sure the spirit to hit thing will be enough.
