Today's emissary (Order of Embers) rewards a weapons cache, [...]
Per a hotfix, these cache rewards should obey your loot spec

So apparently Blizzard thinks my Warlock (destro) should be using a staff because that's what Quickset got. It's a substantial upgrade on the MH/OH combo I had been using so I've swapped for now but I was under the impression that MH/OH was the preferred way for ranged DPS casters to go now.

I don't believe so; I think a 385 staff and a 385 MH/OH will add up to the same amount of int, sta, and secondary stats.  (And weapon DPS doesn't matter for casters.)

I swear it was better to go 1H + offhand over 2H at one point.... but yeah, now it is just a numbers game, and it sucks to have to fill both slots.

Also, that quest apparently only appears at a high level of war-mode faction imbalance across the region, so it's possible for neither side to get the quest on a given week.
A tweet made this a little more precise: the quest comes up when one side has a +20% bonus or higher.  This week alliance have a +15% bonus in the NA region, so we don't get the quest.

[From twitter replies, it seems that some people were able to pick up the quest just after the reset, and it's sharable.  No indication of whether it rewarded 385 or 400 items.  It seems moderately likely that Blizzard will remove any items obtained this way.]

I saw it when I logged in just after reset, and it awarded a 385 item, some conquest, and some azerite.

I'm now at the stage of running multiple alts through warfronts (hate!) and islands (love!) each week. I'm trying to figure out why I have such viscerally different reactions to each. I think some of it feels like the warfronts are rails and islands are sandboxes and maybe I just have a preference for sandboxes?

Both are repetitive but it feels like with islands even if I do get the same map twice in a week (which the game seems to be trying to minimize) there's still variation in which mobs are on it, which invaders show up, and the placement of the scenario objectives that it plays out very differently.

If anyone is interested in a trial Cupcakes trio to do some islands on mythic I'd be willing to bring my raid-geared druid.

Blizzard announced that 8.1.5 is coming out March 12.  This patch will make Kul Tirans and Zandalari Trolls available as allied races, if you meet the unlock requirements (details on that here).

https://www.wowhead.com/news=288372/whats-coming-in-world-of-warcraft-patch-8-1-5 has an overview of what else is in the patch.  I thought we were also getting some naga invasion stuff and a quest line involving the talking shadow priest artifact dagger, but I'm not certain.

The Crucible of Storms mini-raid will open on April 16.  This is not a new tier, just a two-boss mini-raid with loot at the same item level.  wowhead has an article about its loot table; everything has interesting on-equip or on-use effects, as well as a slightly higher item level than the current raid.

8.1.5 started to download today all 7.23 GB of it, seems rather large to me.

Edit: Well I say it started currently doing 0B/s, so started for a funny value of started.

2 Edit: Unless it downloaded it in the 5 minutes I was away making Tea the download has been removed.

8.1.5 patch notes: https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/news/22926354

Naga world quests appear to be in, along with new war campaign quests, a Magni quest which increases your neck item level, and a Hati quest line for hunters.

There's another round of M+ balancing changes.  Caster reaping ghosts won't be as hard to group up, tiny little nuisance enemies won't trigger bolstering/bursting/sanguine, teeming won't be quite as teeming, KR and Shrine will have more forgiving timers, Temple's first boss won't be as deadly, and some other stuff.

On the flip side, skipping to the end boss of Freehold won't grant credit towards four mythic dungeons on dungeon week; we'll have to kill all of the bosses.

I wouldn't call them buffs, but some nice quality of life changes for Fallow and I:

* Symbol of Hopeís channel time reduced to 5 seconds (was 6 seconds) and is now affected by Haste. The amount of mana returned is unchanged.
* Symbol of Hope can now be correctly cast while in Spirit of Redemption.
* Dispel Magic mana cost reduced by 60%.
* Shackle Undead mana cost reduced by 70%.

The trinket of elusiveness also got buffed:

Developers' notes: It was not our intention that these items require extra preparation prior to a boss pull. The Diamond-Laced Refracting Prismís effect was already cleared at the start of a rated PvP match, so this change makes them both consistent between PvP and non-PvP encounters. We have increased the effect of the Sliver by 6% and the Prism by 15% to offset this change in behavior.

Servers are up, several hours ahead of schedule.

The Magni quest gives a +10 item level boost to the neck, and takes just five or ten minutes.

The shift-1 through shift-6 bindings to switch action bars seem to have disappeared for some reason, but can be rebound under Key Bindings -> Action Bar.

Hmmm 77 cycles, I wonder what is going to happen in 11 weeks...
