Graphics cards
« on: June 26, 2017, 11:26:17 AM »
The price of mid range graphics cards as risen sharply (and supply is short) due to the increasing popularity of the Ethereum cryptocurrency.

The higher and lower end seen not to be affected, but if you wanted a mid ranged you're going to have to pay more (and may wait due to supply problems) or wait until the demand/supply gets better.

Yea, that Wannacry attack straight up doubled bitcoin type currency on that day along, making mining with video cards worth it again.

It appears the recent gold rush surrounding Ethereum is coming to an end, which I hope would lead to improved supply and prices.

One of the rumors is that the cryptocurrency price crash is happening because people are cashing out in order to buy into the World Series of Poker.  I don't know if that's true, but it's funny.

Apparently now is a good time to buy a used graphics card, Bitcoin having crashed by something like 50%.

ISTR that the whole GPU thing for mining was more focused on Ethereum (and variants), and explicitly not BitCoin. Something about how Bitcoin is easily mined on ASICs - nobody worth their salt does GPU mining for Bitcoin, whereas Ethereum is resistant to ASIC mining, hence huge honking GPU rigs.

end persnickety nit picking.
