Mastery change for Frost Mages
« on: July 18, 2013, 07:26:35 AM »
So, anyone playing a Frost Mage should go look at:

http://lhiveras-library.com/content/frostburn-dead-long-live-icicles

which is a nice summary and analysis of the major change in mastery on the PTR for frost mages.  The quick summary for those not interested in details:

1) Single target burst damage has been reduced (no damage bonus vs frozen targets)
2) Relative value of mastery for PVE vs PVP is more equal
3) Frost mage overall damage is more backloaded: the mechanic stores up to 5 charges of Icicles (each on the order of 1/3 the power of a generating spell, generally frostbolt/waterbolt), which then get discharged in a slow burst (at 1 charge/sec) with a Ice Lance cast or when the reservoir is full (first one in queue is automatically launched at current target).

Current biggest legitimate worry that I see expressed is that AOE will suffer since the damage bonus against frozen targets is gone.  The biggest playstyle difference I see is that it's really nice to see big burst damage when I'm opening up with my Frozen Orb and Ice Lance spam; that will be reduced quite a bit.
