The Kickstarter whoring thread
« on: May 21, 2013, 05:39:40 AM »
So we've all done it (or some non-trivial portion of us anyway). You see some awesome, beautiful, doomed thing on Kickstarter that could not possibly live in a marketplace outside of the internet. But you desperately want it to exist. So you go to tell your friends, or call your Mom, or post it here and then you realize--you're basically just doing somebody's panhandling for them.

But that's ok. This thread understands you. It just wants to love what you love and see it born into the world. And all the people that don't want to see Kickstarter plugs don't have to come in. The sign over the door tells them what they're going to get, and they can just avoid it.

Here, I'll start.

Jagged Alliance reboot. Self-explanatory.

A Kickstarter is running right now to bring the award-winning Revolution 60 ("with an all-girl cast") to the PC. The organizer is Brianna Wu who I believe is related to Frank Wu, a four-time Hugo winner. They've exceeded their $5,000 goal which means the game will be ported (DRM-free) to PC, I think.  The site is sort of in flux as I write this with the main text and the reward tier texts not agreeing with each other.  Caveat emptor as always.

Have you been waiting for the Starcraft MMO? Here it is! Well, it's _a_ Starcraft MMO.

If we pool together $2500, we can get Marco to design a Boss encounter.

Every time it hits with an avoidable ability attack, it sighs.

I think all raid leaders sigh (well, or yell). My raiders tease me about my sighing and Pogue - who sits in the same room with me - reminds me that I don't have to key the mic if I'm going to sigh at them.

I laughed so hard that I crie when I read this.

The spiritual successor to one of the greatest horror games out there (eternal darkness) could use some lovin, if they do it half as good as eternal darkness it'll certainly be worth it. Complete with fourth wall breaking awesomesauce.

Unsung Story: Tale of the Gaurdians
History is written by winners, and tells the tales of heroes. But where there are winners, there are losers, and wars are not won by heroes alone. Behind the veil of history, there are countless stories that lie forgotten. Reliving these hidden tales is the concept behind the Unsung Story.

This is inspired by the original Final Fantasy Tactics.

REVIVAL!-ing this thread.  Haven't been doing much Kickstarter-ing lately, but this one caught my eye and it's $8 to get a copy of the game, if it gets made, which feels like a pretty cheap bet:

Loki's Adventure, a "Norse noir".  Hand-drawn adventure that purports to be combining Norse mythology and the (US) Roaring 20s aesthetic.

This is a project one of my coworkers is doing. He's the EIC of Clarkesworld, a sci-fi periodical, and they would like to add some translated Chinese sci-fi to their podcast and magazine.

Looks like Don't Starve meets Faster than Light?  The team has pretty good credentials.

The first in-game video for the new Torment game is up.  They're still taking backers and working on stretch goals.

The developers who did Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite are trying to Kickstart funding for a new game with a similar aesthetic but more emphasis on story.  I am intrigued by the notion that the story choices players make will change the environment, so I'm backing this.
