Title: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Wren on July 23, 2012, 08:51:11 AM
Just starting a new thread now that beta is over and launch is in about a month. Anyone else have plans to play? The fun I had in beta combined with no monthly subscription pretty much guarantees I will be playing, there are also a small group of Dissonance folks already in the pre-purchase camp so I'm putting out the feelers since we'll probably create a guild so everyone has buddies to talk to. (and that extends to anyone here who is interested).

I'm probably gonna play.  Maybe not at launch but the no subscription fee part is pretty much a guarantee I grab this at some point.  The other guarantee is I will never, ever, ever have one of those creepy ass things as a character.  Good lord.

I have it pre-ordered. I'll be on as soon as the early access starts.

I just noticed this thing is coming our pretty close to Borderlands 2.  I'll probably grab this once I'm done thoroughly cracking out on Borderlands.

I have a copy pre-ordered and will be playing this when it comes out next month. I will probably be one of the creepy looking rats! >: )

We decided they are gnome-goblin hybrids or gnomblins. I'm going to organize an all Asura fan-club to follow Kharvek's character around.

We can constantly tug on his coat tails to inform of of how wrong he is, and then call him a Bookah.

Some really good info coming out of this.
One quote I noticed that goes back a little to what Snique asked

Quote
The world is pretty big. Players have only seen a fraction of the number of maps that will be in at launch. There's also 7 dungeons that we haven't shown yet, either.

Also for what it's worth it looks like the Dissonance folks are landing on Yak's Bend for server choice. Tarnished Coast is the unofficial RP server. Fort Aspenwood is the Penny Arcade server. (There's a list of community choices by server I'll remember to link it eventually)

Are people planning to play GW2 instead of WoW or in addition?  I find myself wholly unenthusiastic about Pandaria but may go there out of inertia alone. Nothing else has captured my social interest.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Vylin on July 26, 2012, 07:46:17 AM
I lost interest in WoW awhile back, but depending on how good GW2 is I might cancel my SWTOR account. Basically, if GW2 does the things I enjoy (PvP) better than what I'm currently playing, then it would be silly to continue with the latter.

That being said, I know most all of the Cupcakers are big Raiders, so I doubt GW2 will scratch that particular itch well. But its really easy to justify playing both since only 1 has a monthly fee.

I'm finding myself totally uninterested in the new expansion, I just can't work up excitement about another expansion of the same but slightly different.

I'll most likely be playing GW2 and a little Secret World on the side.

Also, stress test tomorrow Aug. 9  12pm-4pm PST Probably a good idea to patch now if you haven't run the patcher recently.

Apparently Felicia Day did the voice for one the Asura's...I forget the name, but I think its the one in blue with the big gauntlet that was helping during a golem-judging event.

I might have to agree with Kharv here. The art for them outside the game was much less creepy than the ones in the game.

Yep she voiced Zojja who you interact with through-out your personal story.

Another stress test: Friday Aug. 10th 4pm-8pm PST (a little more eastern time zone friendly!)

As usual, they will be actively working on the game during the stress test so expect possible game issues as a result. (although in general I've rarely noticed a problem even during the stress tests)

Pretty nice video with a lot of gameplay and shots of the world, worth noting that all of this is actual gameplay and not cutscenes (with I think maybe the exception of 1-2 seconds of closeups of two of the bosses)
Also has some nice commentary from the devs:

Careful of watching videos! I had decided to play an Asura Warrior until I saw someone playing a Mesmer (who knew what they were doing), and now I am back to not being sure what to play.

Warrior
Engineer
Mesmer

ARG! Less than a week left to decide!!!

Yeah I'm waffling between guardian and mesmer, they were my favorite to play in the beta and mesmer just got a nice boost to resolve some its underpoweredness (that's a word, sure).

More people should play this because it's going to be fun. *nods*

Yeah, Guardian is also looking really good...and Elementalist seems to offer to most robust variety of gameplay. GAH!

The only thing I know for sure is I don't want to play Ranger. Thief was alright, but not what I was looking for. And REVIVAL!mancer I am 100% neutral on.

Played Thief throroughout BWE 3 and am sure of it now.  Soooo much fun.

More people should definitely play this game.  I can't wait!

The game looks very good, but I'm not expecting a mass exodus and I have a huge backlog of very good games I paid $5-10 for, so I'm not likely to fork over full price for this.  I'll definitely pick it up when it's cheap, but that could be a while.

(Also, planned or not, Blizzard did an excellent job of scheduling interesting but low-risk stuff on top of the GW2 release date, while still making it possible to play GW2 for a month and then pick up pandas at launch.)
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Snique on August 21, 2012, 05:01:03 AM
I am also waiting for GW to become cheap.  My summer skinflint purchases have been very hit-and-miss so I don't actually have a gaming backlog but I did just drop $40 on MoP and $60 pre-ordering Borderlands 2 so I probably can't justify another $60 on top of that.

There might actually be some deals a few months after release. If I recall correctly I think they've already completely recovered production costs via Pre-Orders. I could be wrong though since I have no source to cite.

All the Dissonance folks will be on Maguuma
It's worth noting that they're leaving server moves free for a while so there's still some flexibility.

I'll change the first page of this post to general info about server and launch later tonite.

Friends of mine were saying that Tarnished Coast was the "unofficial RP server" in the sense that ER is an "RP" server - less lulz more full sentences.  Truth?
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Wren on August 24, 2012, 06:10:10 AM
Tarnished Coast is where a bunch of RP guilds have coordinated where they're going to go. Yep. Everyone is currently a bit hazy as to what the server population caps are going to be so it may or may not be easy to roll where large communities are targeting. I have a link somewhere with an overview.

I also know that Fort Aspenwood is the Penny Arcade chosen server.

Really in my experience in all the betas and stress tests I didn't see a huge difference between the rp server and non-rp server. The only time I noticed a real difference was when I accidentally landed on the server the 9gag community had chosen, then I ran away.

Generally if you don't already have a tie to a community, what will drive your choice is WvWvW pvp as that is really the only thing that is server specific.

Here we go, this is the most up to date list I think of known chosen servers:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/srmfg/homeworlds_of_various_online_communities_for/

it's hard to sort through since some of the lists were just added or changed around throughout the beta weekends, but I think this gives a general idea

*comes up for air* woo. That was a good headstart weekend. There were some issues but Arenanet has been steadily chewing threw them and posting updates which is always nice to see. Understandably the biggest batch dealt with login issues which I was lucky enough not to run into (sorry Ungrimmar!) but overall really one of the smoothest launches I've seen, it'll be interesting to see how hard they get hit in the second round with the official launch day.

I've had a lot of fun, I spent probably close to 2 hours working on a jumping puzzle I discovered in the starting zone. It was frustrating but sort of amazing to discover (it's not marked on the map in any way, you just sort of discover it)  video if you're interested: http://youtu.be/xBMFAfWIj5M

Sorry I have not tried to look for any Cupcakers in game yet. I am trying to figure out what class I want to focus on. I got my Asura Warrior (Ghearebox) to 10, and my Human Mesmer (Keare) to 8. Right now I am leaning heavily towards Mesmer, but I want to try out Staff and Greatsword weapon abilities first. For now the Sword / Gun combo is working out to be my favorite, but the Greatsword abilities remind me of the Moon Sword from Dark Souls.

Anyways, my initial impressions of the game is that it is very overwhelming. The world is HUGE and every environment bombards me with details. There is also so much to do between finding Points of Interest, Viewpoints, Crafting, seemingly endless Dynamic Events, Skill Challenges, Area Quests, and Person Story Quests. That being said, its a very bright and colorful game. I'm actually a little disappointed everything is so happy, cheerful, and positive. Nothing is dirty, grimy, or dark that I've seen so far. Thus far it feels very PG. I might try to get into the PvP tonight after doing some more research on Mesmer and what sort of builds work well together.

I really liked greatsword for mesmer when I played it in beta, it's great when you don't want to be in the thick of things. I'm leveling up a guardian as my main but mesmer is awfully fun so I'll probably pick that up next.

If you decide you need a guild chat you're welcome to hit me up for an invite!

Once I was able to login around 6pm Saturday, I never had another hiccup of any sort through the rest of the weekend.  I've been enjoying the weapon/skill dynamic and figuring out combos.  I finished the starting zone last night (100% woot!) I guess I'll have to go back and try the jumping game in the Norn starting zone, I found it but had no idea what it was at the time and nothing ever sent me back to it afterwards.  Overall it was very enjoyable and I'll be starting my REVIVAL! this week to get a feel for a non-melee class.

One interesting note...nearly every single name Character Name has been taken. Its amazing. I sat through a good while trying to pick a name or variation of a name in order to get something that looked decent. I think I might just bite the bullet and put a Surname on every character or a Title of sorts.

Also a note here in case you didn't see in the contact list. There is a guild you can join if you want, it's mostly dissonance folk and related friends but they're all nice adult gamer types who probably would have ended up on these boards except they played horde and didn't :) There's about 20ish people in guild right now, a decent portion of them are interested in WvWvW pvp and you'll probably see them hanging about vent pretty regularly for that reason.

Anyone is welcome to an invite just holler at me. I've already abducted Ungrimmar.

Guild name is: Chaotic Agents of Terror (CAT)

Also of note: you can be in more than one guild, so you have options!

Is it possible to play on two different servers?  It seems like you need to pick one and stick with it....which really sucks since I"m playing on Henge of Denravi to play with work people but also wanna play with you guys...and it appears I can't have characters on both.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Periastron on August 27, 2012, 12:34:37 PM
This is not possible*.  All of your characters are bound to one server.  However:

Quote from: ArenaNet
In time, we’ll also introduce free “guesting,” which will allow players to visit other worlds as guests as long as they have friends on those worlds. This feature will be free, but guest players will not be able to enter World vs. World, and the Power of the Mists bonuses from their home world will continue to apply to their characters.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/a-world-of-choice-the-regions-of-guild-wars-2

No timetable for this has been given yet.

* Server transfers are free and unlimited for the time being, so you can move around that way; however, you run the risk of being stranded on a server with no way to get back, if your original server hits "Full" status while you're away.
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?
Post by: Wren on August 27, 2012, 01:26:21 PM
Yeah there will eventually be the guesting feature and you can belong to guilds cross-server as well. So it'll open up over time. I think they probably want to get past launch and let the populations settle before they tackle opening up guesting.

Post by: Kharvek on August 27, 2012, 02:29:55 PM
Well that sucks.  Guess I won't see any of you guys unless someone wants to hang out on the totally sweet Henge of Denravi server.  It's so cool.  There's barely any Asura players and that jerk Wren isn't there!
Title: Re: Guild Wars 2 - Who's Planning to Play?

Please be kind :(

Also you should post your contact info anyway (if you didn't already, I haven't checked) And if you want a guild invite so you can chat when you're not with your big fancy work friends you're welcome to one.

I'm Vanderhuge.7819 and I'm on the Henge of Denravi server.

Is there any kinda cross-server communication allowed at all?

.....and it's okay Wren.  It's just my anger coming out that I realized I can't hang with both groups of people I wanna play with.

I got sucked into the PvP scene last night and it was awesome. I didn't play long, but it was a lot of fun to see how fast paced and quick the matches go. It reminds me a lot of Counter-Strike, and I especially like that once the match is over, you are loaded into a new match and can just deathmatch in your current match. I have a feeling I will be doing this style of gameplay the most, as I can just log in and do a few matches, then split.

Another cool aspect (aside from FINALLY having gear normalization) is that every "level up" in PvP, you get a treasure chest that has a few PvP items you can add to your collection. These are purely cosmetic and looking at the list there are hundreds of them. And the best part...the collection is accessable to any of your other characters. So even if you are a Light Armor class and you get some Heavy Armor items, your Heavy Armor class can go to the PvP Locker and pick up the skins.

Anyways, I'll look to join CAT this evening when I get on. =)

OK. I'll check for you when I login too :)

There's about 30 folks in guild at this point, as I said before it's mixture of Diss folk and their related friends. And with the addition of Kharvek we're becoming strangely well-rounded in representing different game studios.
So far we have EA, Ubisoft and now Volition.
